A Note from Mr. Coppenrath (Taylor's Dad)

When Taylor and I were leaving the facility after today's game there was a small crowd of fans waiting for him, and a line of young children with pens looking for his autograph (see photos ); one of the young women said to me, "he is our best player!" and I said, "he is my son!"... ;-)

Love that! :)

Today's Game

It was a victorious day today for Alicante and Taylor!  They beat Melilla 104-75!  Taylor played 22 minutes and scored 12 points!  Taylor's father, George, was at the game today and has sent pictures... look for those tomorrow!

Congratulations Taylor and Alicante! :)

Game on Sunday!

Taylor's Dad sent an email making it easy for everyone to watch Taylor's next game, it's a big one!

Taylors next game is Sunday, 11/16/08 at 6:30 am Eastern time. They are playing Melilla which is the number 2 team in the League (Alicante is currently #1); also former team mate Keith Waleskowski now plays for Melilla.
Here is a link to the video stream:
find the list of games on the right side; click on the "Lucentum Alicante" game; that will open up the video of the game inside the TV screen. Taylor is #15, usually wears high white socks with black ankle braces...
click on "El Equipo" (the team in Spanish) on the left to see the roster there...
Also there is an interesting website that I open and place beside the video stream on my monitor; it provides play by play narrative and a live box score; with several other tabs of data at the top...
click on the En Vivo button in the middle of the scoreboard and it will open up the live play by play, etc. for that game. You can pick the screen that gives you the best analysis; I like the live box score with running narrative under it; you can scroll back in the narrative if you miss something.
Sometimes one of the feeds is ahead of the other... makes it more interesting...
And finally, here is a link to the schedule (calendar) of games; be sure and change the season to 2008/2009 at the top right; you can see the dates and times of all future games; and by clicking on the tiny notebook in the front of games all ready played, you can view the box scores for that game:

Update from Taylor

We won at home over the weekend by 15 points or so! We played better in the second half then in the first to keep the lead and win the game. It is our 6th straight (I think?) win! A couple of the players and their wives, children and families went out to eat after the game on Sunday. We had some cidra which is like hard apple cider. It was a lot of fun to get to know the guys more and meet their families!

We won the game before this home one by two in Vic. This Friday we are playing against Pat Carroll's team. He played with us last year.
Also? Our clocks have changed!

Update from Taylor

Hey everything has been going well. I arrived back in Alicante, Spain on Wednesday August 20th. I had to stay in a hotel until the same apartment I had last year was ready. I didn't move in until Sept 1st. We are just finishing preseason with another scrimmage on Sunday. We have played about 4 scrimmages this preaseason and have won all of them. I have played pretty well averaging double digit scoring. I am enjoying myself and getting to know the new guys on the team and continuing my friendship with the ones who returned. We have had to do some running and lifting and even some workouts in a swimming pool. The weather is great and looks like a great start to the season.

Play Offs

We have an update from Taylor today about their first playoff game! He writes:

Well the first game didnt go quite as we hoped. We were playing well but needed to get lucky at the end. We were down a few points with a minute or so to go and Alain hit a three. Then we were down three with about a minute and we ran two high screen and rolls for the point guard and everyone collapsed inside and I was left open and took the three and made it to tie the game.

Then next posession, I was called for a foul and had to leave with 5 fouls. They made one of two free throws, we went down and missed a three and got the rebound but was called for a foul again. So the other team made one of two again leaving us down by two with 20 seconds left in the game. Then we ran a play and Martynas was fouled intentionally or unsportsman like and was giving two free throws and we would have the ball with 7 seconds. Their coach started yelling and was given two technicals and ejected from the game. So Martynas made two free throws and Alain made four free throws putting us up four with the ball. We inbounded to Alain and he was fouled again and made both. We won the game!!!

vs. Milk Breogán River

Translated from the website:

"The Alicante Coast surpassed its test before Milk Breogán River after a end of infarct. This way, the alicantino set maintains the third seat, Óscar Quintana adds his second consecutive victory and the equipment acquires an injection of self-esteem when surpassing to a direct rival by the fight of the ascent to ACB. Both equipment went to the track to by all. The first minutes were a hand by hand between Taylor Coppenrath and Nacho Ordín. Both players were the ones in charge to maintain the equality between equipment both thanks to their success under the hoop (5-5).

With the new exit of Carroll the alicantinos took the reins from the encounter. The American managed to fit seven followed points and to encarrilar the victory of the lucentino set. The last and decisive quarter was most exciting. Coppenrath was the one in charge to inaugurate the marker. After both minutes of game, those of Alpaca Garci'a followed clogged and without putting in the hoop."

vs. Bruesa GBC

In one of the biggest games of the season, Alicante Costa Blanca beat the first place team, Bruesa GBC 90 - 79 in a very hard fought game last week. As a result of that game Bruesa GBC dropped to third and Alicante moved to second place!

Taylor started and, despite getting in early foul trouble and playing less than half of the game (17 mins) he scored 7 points and was the leading rebounder with 6.

Taylor Writes...

Hi Everyone!

Things are going well at practice! We have a game on friday and Ethan and my mom arrived safe and sound for their visit. My teammates, Keith and Josh are hurt however, so we will be playing our game without two very talented teammates. Other than that, I think everything should go well and hope we can get the victory!

Congratulations to the UVM men's basketball team and their successful season. I was hoping they would make it to the championship game and head to the tournament.

I am playing now with teammate Pat Carroll and he played with a couple of players on the Vermont Frost Heaves so sometimes we get a chance to talk about how they are doing. It is great now that we have a lot of opportunities for athletes in every sport and are getting more and more competetive in the State of Vermont.

Best wishes to everyone!!

A Break from our Regularly Scheduled Broadcast

We know you love hearing about Taylor and all of his basketball and non-basketball related stories but today we thought it would be fun to shed a little light on someone who is very important to Taylor: his younger brother Drew.

Much like his older brother (and oldest brother and dad...) Drew Coppenrath loves the game of basketball. He has spent the last four years playing basketball for the University of Southern Maine and is well-known as one of the best players in the Little East Conference. As an annual top-rebounder and double scorer he was a leader on and off the court. Drew just finished his collegiate basketball career and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him on his many accomplishments.

Here's to YOU Drew, you've made everyone proud!

(if you would like to read more about Drew and his basketball career click HERE)

The game was close and exciting but Alicante was trailing by 2 (87-85) in the last 30 seconds. Nick George hit a 3 pointer with 25 seconds left to give Alicante an 88-87 win!

Sounds like a great game! Way to go Taylor and Alicante!

And Now for Basketball

Taylor only had one game while we were in Alicante, but it was awesome! The fans are totally wild and into the game- - the gym was buzzing with excitement- - and they have a remote-control blimp that flies over the court during time-outs. The game was close (they only won by three points) but they managed to stay ahead the entire second half. Taylor hurt his knee pretty early in the game but he played through it and didn't disapoint us! We hadn't seen him play in a LONG time so it was really fun regardless! (I'm sure we didn't cause any commotion cheering/yelling in English either...) :)

And, we've mentioned this before, but Taylor's teamates are. just. awesome. It was fun to see all of them together on and off the court!

Here are some pictures from the game!

We have pretty awesome video from the game too, we'll post it when we figure out how... :)

Tonight's the NIGHT

We have been having an amazing time with Taylor in Alicante.  We've done lots of sightseeing and yesterday we took a trip north to Benidorm.  If you ever have a chance to come to la Costa Blanca, don't miss it.  This is one of the most beautiful places we have visited.  It's the middle of winter here (although to our Vermont hearts it seems more like spring) so the beaches are empty but we've been enjoying them anyway.  The balcony from Taylor's apartment overlooking the ocean has been the site of many meals since our arrival and provides the perfect backdrop to a Mediterranean vacation.

Today we are heading to el barrio and el porto in Alicante and stopping at the grocery store.  Tonight, Taylor has a home game that we're all attending!  We can't wait to see him and the team in action and are looking forward to cheering them on!  We have lots of pictures to share and will be back with an update of the game later today/tomorrow!

Until then we are celebrating en la estila de espana.  :)
