The Party's Over

Following is a section copied from the home page of the website today:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE SEASON IS OVER ! ! The bad news is that Melilla lost in the semi-final game last evening, 5/21/2010, and the season is finished. Ford Burgos moves on to the championship series. The good news for Taylor's family, friends and fans is that Taylor is coming home to Vermont next week!
Here is a brief, roughly translated summary from a Spanish sports website, Solobasket.com:

"It is party night in Burgos. after the great success by Ford Burgos basketball team tonight. The local team managed to deliver to a home audience the third and final game of the semi-final series by beating one of the favorites, a Melilla Basketball team that 'says goodbye' to the season with their heads held high after having been proclaimed champion of the Prince Cup and dominating the league for much of the championship. But in spite of completing the best season of their history the team arrives without the final championship."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A quick note to thank everyone who followed Taylor and his exploits with Melilla this season. These past two years in Spain have been wonderful for Taylor. He has a reputation for being a consistent, strong inside scorer, and defender, while playing against many larger players.
We are developing a new website for Taylor, www.taylorcoppenrath.com where you can follow his activities in the offseason, e.g., summer basketball camps, etc. If you know of young players who might be interested in his camps, one at Winooski HS and one at St Johnsbury School, there is more information and easily downloaded registration forms on the website (simply click on the "Summer Camps" tab.)

vs. Ford Burgos

Taylor's next game is Friday, 5/21/2010, at 3:00 pm at home.

Melilla won the first game of the semi-final series vs. Ford Burgos but lost the second game at home. On Wednesday they also lost the third game and trail Burgos 2 - 1.

The game was somewhat controversial due to several disputed calls by referees and the Club of Melilla basketball released an official condemnation of the lopsided (in their view) calls against Melilla.
This is a huge game; if Melilla loses the season is over; if Melilla wins, game 5 would be at home in Melilla on Sunday.

vs. Ford Burgos

Taylor's next game is Wednesday, 5/19/2010, at 3:00 pm. Melilla won the first game of the semi-final series vs. Ford Burgos but lost the second game at home.

Taylor had a great game: high scorer and rebounder with 16 points and 11 rebounds; but the Burgos team hit a lot of 3s and pulled out the win. The team now travels to Burgos for the next two games, Wednesday and Friday and need to win at least one to bring the final game back to Melilla.

vs. Zaragoza

Taylor's next game is tomorrow Friday, 04/23/2010, at 3:00 pm at home vs Zaragoza, the first place team, that has, unfortunately clinched first place for the regular season and will automatically advance to the ACB (Euroleague) Division.
This game will be interesting, but somewhat of anticlimatic because win or lose Melilla will be the #1 seed in the playoffs, while Zaragoza will end its season by advancing directly to the ACB. This game is the last regular season game; immediately following are the playoffs with 8 teams playing for the right to advance to the ACB with Zaragoza. Best of five for 1/4 finals, semi-finals and championship games.

@ Girona

Taylor's next game is Sunday, 04/11/2010, at 12:30 pm at Girona, in Girona, Spain; just north of Barcelona and where Marc Gasol once played.
Taylor had a great game vs Leon last Saturday, 23 pts, 9 rbds and 3 assists for a "valuation" of 39... European basketball has an interesting valuation system, a formula that weights playing time, pts, rebounds, steals, blocks, assists, fouls made, fouls earned, turnovers, etc. Basically all stats are weighed in a formula and that is more accurate a reflection of the contribution of a player than points or rebounds alone.

Taylor writes, "Congratulations to the Men's and Women's Basketball teams at UVM for making the NCAA tournament. An extra congratulations for the women winning the first round game. I watched all of the games and was glad to have played at UVM. It was also an exciting year for the Men's Hockey team!

vs. La Laguna

Taylor's next game is today, Friday, 03/19/2010, at 4:00 pm at home vs La Laguna, the third place team. Spain's Daylight Savings Time does not start for two weeks, so there is a 5 hour time difference until then.
Due to weather problems and delayed and cancelled flights the team was on planes or in airports for over 14 hours and at game time had no uniforms because the team equipment was lost. So Melilla wore La Palma uniforms; One team wore red La Palma uniforms and the other wore light blue La Palma uniforms.
With the loss at La Palma last week Melilla has dropped to second place, which means they have win every remaining game to have a chance at ending the season on April 23 in first place.

GAME UPDATE!

From Taylor's father, George:

For those of you who had planned to watch the game today, please note that the video steam has not been put up on the list as of the time of this email; and the game may not be available for viewing.
There is the live box score with play by play narrative at the same website; simply click on the large middle button on the top right part of the screen entitled, "balencesto en vivo." Then page through the screens (arrow at bottom right) until you find the scoreboard for the "UV La Palma vs CB Melilla" game and click on the En Vivo button.
UPDATE:
The Melilla team left melilla yesterday morning around 9:30; and got stuck in madrid due to flight problems to tenerife; where they have to go; then take a shuttle flight to la palma; so they eventually fly to tenerife; but could not land; tried twice at the larger northern airport; and then went to the southern airport; from where the team had to take a bus back up to the northern airport for a flight to la palma; they didnt get to la palma until 11pm or so last night; missed that evening's scheduled shoot around practice... until later this morning... also their equipment is lost; so they will be playing today wearing la palma's red uniforms ... although no one will know because the game is not on the video stream list !! ;-)

Good luck Taylor !!

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Taylor's next game is Friday, 02/26/10, at 3 pm at home vs Clinicas Rincon.
Melilla lost at Palencia last week. Taylor was called for two quick fouls and sat most of the first half; and two more fouls in the second; his time on the court was limited to around 10 minutes and although he had only 2 pts, he had 5 rebounds.
That puts Melilla in second place behind Zaragoza. Both teams have the same record, but Zaragoza beat Melilla in the beginning of the season at Zaragoza which sets up a very important game at the end of the season. The last regularly scheduled game for Melilla is vs Zaragoza at home and may be the deciding game for 1st place in the league.

Next Game @ HOME!

Taylor's next game is this, Sunday, 01/31/10, at 7 am at home. It is the two week mid-season break for the league so there are no regularly scheduled games. However, the top two teams play an exhibition game called the "de la Copa Príncipe" (the Prince Cup). It is a very big game and most basketball fans in Spain will be watching.
Taylor is one of only a few players who have played in the past three Prince Cups as he has been on either the first or second place team each year he has been in Spain!
Although Taylor is the top scorer for Melilla he does so coming off the bench.
The game is also interesting becuase the visiting coach used to be the coach at Melilla and 4 of the Menorca players were at Melilla last season. The current coach of Melilla was the assistant coach to the visiting Menorcan coach last year when he was at Melilla.

@ Zaragoza

Taylor's next game is tomorrow, Sunday, 01/03/10, at 12:00 noon, at Zaragoza. This is the biggest game of the season so far! Melilla is in first place and Zaragoza is tied for second. Zaragoza has the home court advantage.
The press in Spain has been promoting this game and a match up between the post players.
The Prince Phillip cup referred to is a mid-season championship game played in a couple of weeks (mid-season) between the top two teams; adding more importance to this game as the #1 team retains home court advantage for the "Prince Cup."
