Yesterday's Game

This is an excerpt from a Spanish article about last night's game:
"Coppenrath in the paint once again proved he is one of the best Americans in the competition, 25 points left of center U.S. patents the local superiority in the domestic game. Amid screams and applause from the public and some 'oles' men of Gonzalo Garcia passed like a roller over the island's squad (Mallorca), which was left only the option of looking at the good play of the home team".

WAY TO GO TAYLOR!!!!!

Happy Holidays all!

Taylor on Youtube!

We realize that many of you are not able to watch some of Taylor's games because of the time of day or technical difficulties. The screen size is small and the quality via the Internet feed is not always clear.
Occasionally games are posted on Youtube in their entirety!

We have a link below to one of those games. Be patient and watch the complete game if you can because Taylor has one of his better games. It is real time so even half time is running but you do not see much of anything, but you can hear the audio and fans with their horns.
Here is a link to Taylor's game that was posted on youtube:
Note: Taylor does not usually start because the coach wants to end the half and end the game with Taylor as he plays excellent defense all over the court and takes care of the ball. This particular game one of the coaches made an error on the official roster so Starosta (the 7'1" center from the Czech Republic) did not start and Taylor did (so when you see Taylor start and then leave in 2 minutes that is the reason...)

Happy Holidays!

He had an awesome game last Friday with 19 pts, 9 rebounds, and was selected as the MVP of the game! However, it was Melilla's the first loss of the season. They are now 3 - 1 and have two games this week: a home game on Wed at 4 pm Eastern time (the game in Spain is still at 9pm, but Spain has adopted daylight savings time and the time difference (until the US switches) is only 5 hours... and the second game is on Sunday at 2pm Eastern time!

Alicante's Playoff Cover

That's Taylor on the cover!

Spain Year Two- Complete!

Taylor Coppenrath, former standout basketball player at St Johnsbury Academy and UVM finished a very successful year in Alicante, Spain. On Sunday, 5/31/09, the Lucentum Alicante professional basketball team won the championship of the LEB Gold Division in Spain with a win over Melilla 72 - 66. The win moves the team into the ACB Division from where the Euroleague teams play. Taylor played 27 ½ minutes, scoring 10 points and shutting down the paint on defense to the Melilla low post players. Over the season Taylor averaged about 10.6 pts and 4.5 rebounds per game playing about 20 minutes per game.
After graduating from UVM in 2005 Taylor played on the NBA summer league teams for the Boston Celtics, AEK in Athens, Greece 2005 -06; NBA Indiana Pacers summer league 2006; Angelico Biella in Biella, Italy 2006 – 07, and Lucentum Alicante for the past two seasons. Alicante had specifically wanted Taylor to help them ascend to the ACB based on his past European experience. It turned out to be a good decision as Alicante is now in the ACB!

Taylor returns to Vermont on Wednesday and will be hosting basketball camps in Winooski and St Johnsbury this summer.

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES

COME ON!
Alicante won the LEB Gold Championship today which moves them into the top division, the ACB, in Spain where the top four teams play in the Euroleague. Reaching the ACB was a goal for the team for the past two years and one of the reasons they wanted Taylor to play for them.

They did it~

It was *such* an exciting game! Congratulations to Taylor and the team!

Second Playoff Game!

Taylor's next game is at Ford Burgos (the second playoff game!) on
Friday, 5/22/09, at 3 pm Eastern time.

Alicante won the first game on Tuesday, and George, Taylor's Dad, was able to watch in person. Taylor had a great game - see below from Eurobasket website:
"LEB Gold Round: 1 (Quarter-Finals) - May 20, 2009 (by Eurobasket News)
Alicante - Burgos 89-69
Nice 20-point win by Alicante for 1-0 lead in the quarterfinals. Taylor Coppenrath (205-F-81, college: Vermont) this time stepped up for the hosts collecting 16 points and 5 rebounds. Diego Garcia was on fire in Burgos with 23 points"

Monday, May 18, 2009

Its Playoff Time!

Taylors next game is at home (the first playoff game!)

on Tuesday, 5/19/09, at 3 pm Eastern time.

From Taylor's Dad:

The regular season ended Friday with a win for Alicante (was in second place) and a loss by Valladolid (was in first place.) Therefore both teams have identical records, 25 - 9, but because Valladolid beat Alicante home and away, they are ranked ahead of Alicante, and advance automatically to the Euroleague division (ACB) having secured the #1 position in the regular season.
NOTE: In Spain there are four major divisions of professional basketball: ACB (where the Euroleague teams play from); LEB Gold (where Alicante is currently); LEB Silver, and LEB Bronze. At the end of every season the top two teams from each division move up a division, and the bottom two teams move down a division. Martin Klimes (who played at UVM with Taylor) plays on a professional team in the LEB Bronze division:
The remaining top teams, #2 through #9 enter the playoffs with Alicante having the top seed. The winner of the playoff series also advances to the Euroleague division (ACB) and that is the goal for Alicante.
The playoff schedule is now on www.febtv.com (the same site where the games are viewed; simply scroll down...

Good Luck Taylor! We'll be watching and routing for you guys!

A Note from Taylor

Last week we won our game against Tenerife which is the team that Pat Carroll plays for now. We beat them, and now this week we play against another former teammate of mine from last year's team, Stephane Dumas. He plays for Valladolid and right now we are tied with them although they are technically in first place. Our game is in Valladolid and is on Wed at 9 pm in Spain or 3 pm Eastern Standard Time.

On another note my Mother and younger brother Drew are here visiting and are trying to go to the game. Hopefully they can provide some pictures for you to see!

The Photo

We got it!

Caption from Today's Paper

In Spain of course. :) Couldn't upload the picture that went with it, you'll have to take our word that it was awesome.

"Martynas Andriuskevicius, without jumping, and Taylor Coppenrath, with determination, combine efforts to prevent the basket of Matt Kiefer. /RAFA OIL MILL"

and a rough translation from an article in the newspaper:

'The Lucentum Alicante won by far (97-77) with forcefulness over the Club Basquet Vic in the game that closed the 22nd game of Liga LEB Gold and it consolidates the leadership by three victories, persued by Valladolid and Tenerife.
There was no surprise in the morning of Sunday and the Lucentum showed from the first quarter a consistency that left without answer from the visitors, Vic, who played always behind in the game.

Andriskevicius in the paint, Jorge Garci'a and Urtasun from the perimeter, Coppenrath in all the lands, set out conclusive arguments in the game in favor of front leader who travels at full speed towards the first place ascent to ACB. Albert Sabat was the high scorer for the visitors."

Game 20

Translated from the Lucentum website:
"The Lucentum forget the ghosts the Lagoon (Canary Islands.) The defeat in the Canary Islands of the past week passed in the minds of the players of the Lucentum Alicante during first half of the game who fought Sunday against the Extra Pujol Lleida. The men of Oscar Quintana were behind in the game during both first quarters because the Catalans entered the event seeming to fear the defeat of the importance of winning in a day in which all the other top teams lost.
Faithful to his policy of rotations, the Alicante Lucentum coach gave minutes to his ten players, with Taylor Coppenrath the man who had more minutes played because this was one of his better games of the season. He captured seven rebounds, scored 13 points and gave a best performance in the end, being the player best evaluated at the end of the game.
But there was an essential player in the overcome one and victory local was, once again, Txemi Urtasun. When the situation could not be worse, after three consecutive triples of the pívot of the other team, Hettsheimeir (30-40), the Alicante Lucentum team took the responsibility on its back and scored ten consecutive points that recoverd the breath to the fans of Alicante. Once they overcame the scare, the home team knew how to maintain and to increase the advantage with a great defense on the low posts that no longer returned to see the hoop with as much comfort, reason by which the Alicante Lucentum team ended up raising itself with a triumph that allows them to breathe one more a day in highest of the classification."

From a Spanish Newspaper

Here is a (roughly) translated article from a Spanish paper today!

"Coppenrath emphasizes the importance of gaining the Prince Cup by maintaining the same level of teamwork."
Taylor Coppenrath, post player of the Basketball Lucentum Alicante, emphasized the importance of beating Melilla for the the Prince Cup, for not just the value of obtaining the title for the organization, but mainly " to continue with winning teamwork" in that is the strategy trained by Oscar Quintana. "To gain the Cup is important for us, not for being the Cup, but to continue in winning dynamics. Our objective is to win to continue being competitivos" Coppenrath declared. The American player, in this sense, considered positive that the Lucentum is going to play well this weekend, regardless that the rest of teams of the LEB - except for the Melilla, are going to enjoy a rest due to mid-season break; because, in his opinion, the team needs is " to continue working hard, not rest". He recognized that to gain the Prince Cup the team would give "a statement of authority" facing the rest of clubs of the LEB, although he does not consider that anyone is going to consider them " the favorites to ascenso" by the mere fact to gain this title. "I do not believe that the winner is guarenteed to advance, because the past year Breogán won and continues in LEB" he argued. "Two victories of advantage on our pursuers are not enough. We must continue gaining each game to increase the difference with the rest of the teams and to secure our objective to ascend directly to the ACB" , he added. Finally, with respect to the game on Sunday against the Melilla, he thought that the score will not be as forceful as the one from the first game of the league (104-75). "Each game is different" pointed out Coppenrath, each game can be "difficult" and he recognizes that, at the last time: "I was surprised by the comfortable victory over Melilla for us at home".

Yesterday's Game

Here is a rough translation about Taylor's game yesterday from Babel Fish:

"The Clinics Corner paid a lot to a bad beginning (0-13) before the lead team and lost the options to surprise those of Quintana in the Corner of the Victory. The players of Alicante, led by Coppenrath, raised a very serious party from the initial minutes, although later protagonism was for the outer players. The Malagan team tried to overcome in the last the quarter, where it knew to unfold his better game, and a 15-2 partisan who was able to endorse with over-exertion to the visitors sirivó to send the party to the prorogation. Nevertheless, those of the Clinics Corner arrived fused at the overtime and they only wrote down 3 points in these five minutes that served so that the Lucentum signed its victory. With this victory, the present leaders of Liga mathematically obtain to the passport for the Glass Prince. MVP: Taylor Coppenrath, that in spite of being surpassed in valuation by players of the Clinics, was determining for the victory of his team becoming the inner reference. His numbers: 14 points +5 rebounds."

Sounds like Taylor had a fantastic game! :)
